Vermentino is a late-ripening white grape thought to originate in Spain or Madeira, and now widely planted in Corsica, Sardinia, and the Italian coastal arc running from Tuscany through to Liguria. In southern France around Nice (where it is known as Rolle) it is part of the AOC Bellet and is increasingly being planted in the Languedoc. It is thought to be related to the Malvasia grape variety and to have been brought to Italy in the fifteenth century during the period of Spanish domination.
The most famous wine made from Vermentino is probably the DOCG Vermentino di Gallura (and Vermentino di Gallura superiore) which is produced in the north of Sardinia. Patrimonio, located in the north of Corsica, in the Saint Florent gulf, was the first region of the island to attain AC status (in 1968). Its white wine is 100% Vermentino. It is also one of the most exciting new introductions into Australia and has recently been planted in California.
Vermentino is a superb white grape variety that offers you a difference from Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Vermentino wines are a pale straw colour have bright acidity, aromas of citrus leaf and mineral, and a refreshing finish. In the mouth, Vermentino shows flavors of green apple and lime, heightened by refreshing acidity, good richness and medium body. The wine’s crispness makes it a delicious accompaniment to fresh seafood, oysters on the half shell, or grilled Mediterranean vegetables.
Why not take the opportunity to order some of the lovely Vermentino from Domaine de Cantaussel.
